JANUARY 2019
This month you are required to create an example of animation that features the principle of "overlapping action" . . .
Notice how the ears and the soft parts of the mouth of this dog's slow motion action follow behind the main action of the head as it turns. This effect in animation is known as "overlapping action". . .
In effect "overlapping action" can be defined as a secondary form of animation, where the softer or more fluid parts of a character or object display a delayed action when they move - that is, when compared to the primary action of that character or object. For example, if a girl with long hair moves her head, the hair will delay in following the head's action and then will only catch up and settle down when the head stops moving - in a similar way to the dog's ears and head above.
This month's challenge therefore needs to demonstrate the principle of overlapping action in reality. You may choose a character (or object) of your own design, where the looser or more fluid aspects of your design need to follow behind the main part's action. You can even copy the dog action above if you like - or perhaps even relate back to last month's drawing challenge and use a badger instead! Alternatively, you don't have to animate an animal at all - as long as the principle of "overlapping action" is well illustrated.
The most imaginative use of "overlapping action" will win this month's challenge.
So over to you everyone. . . and "good luck" with your submission! :)
