MARCH 2018
In my 'Drawing for Animation' classes I teach my students the core principles of pose and movement using observational gesture drawings. I set a theme, or principle, to be studied and supply images that students work from. Usually I ask them to do a 3-minute gesture drawing sketch of each, expecting them to push the pose and/or exaggerate the action in some plausible way. So, this month I thought I'd take the pressure of everyone (from an animating point of view) and set a drawing challenge instead.
Below are 4 images that I use to focus on dynamic, athletic action. Referring to these images, and using a character of your own choice, draw your own dynamic versions of each on on single page/digital image. I won't set a time limit on how long you take to do each drawing, so you can spend as long as you like perfecting your work. However, I will be looking to see if you've observed the original pose correctly and then how well you've pushed it and enabled it to tell its own story. Background art is not necessary, unless you choose to add it of your own accord. (Note: Photgraphic or realistic drawing is NOT wanted here - although IMAGINATION is!
Good luck with your drawing challenge folks. Remember, put all your 4 drawings onto one page and be as imaginative as you can - although accuracy of observation of these poses is an absolute requirement.
Deadline:
Submissions must be in by midnight on FRIDAY, MARCH 30th (Pacific Time).
