MAY 2017
The 'WEIGHT' drawing/animation challenge.
Below are a number of 3-minute gesture drawings I did from photographic and/or video reference for my 'Drawing for Animation' class in Seattle. The subjects are either people balancing weight, carrying weight or simply weighty people in action. Therefore, this month's challenge is all about 'WEIGHT' in movement.
Animators must always remember that unless there is an indication of 'weight' in their poses their animation will never define weight at all - no matter how hard they work at it. Most bad animation suffers from a lack of weight contained in it. Therefore it pays us enormously to make sure that our key poses are strong 'weight' positions, whatever our scene objectives are.
This month's challenge is a bit of an experiment. It is not only for members who like to contribute drawings but it will also offer an opportunity to animate the challenge as an alternative option Ultimately, what I'm looking for are submissions (drawn or animated) that define weight in its pose or action. To do it, you have the following 2 options . . .
i) Sketch from any visual references you can find 4 key poses that define weight in action. You should take no longer than 5 minutes to draw each pose and all your 4 poses should be contained in one, single submission file.
Alternatively . . .
ii) Animate in no longer than 10-seconds a piece of animation that defines weight in action. The animation can be any form - i.e. 2D (pencil test), 3D (any rig, no background), Claymation or whatever. However, like the drawing option, its appearance has to give the impression of weight in action also. Files should be submitted in a video format onto the same private Facebook group page as normal.
The winners and chosen finalists of both these challenges will presented on our website 'Gallery' page as per normal, and winners will both receive a digital certificate of accomplishment.
Note: Our duel challenge for drawings or animation is free as usual. However, for a small fee, 'PRO' members might like to take advantage of the significantly reduced mentoring fee for Sketchclub members. For $10 I will personally review, analyze and/or critique your work. Feedback suggestions will be both text-based (by Private Messaging on Facebook) and using draw-over sketches from your animation to illustrate the point. This opportunity is in response to member requests. Further details of this and my other professional services can be found by scrolling down the 'Rates' page on The Animator's Friend website.
Lastly . . .
‘Good luck’ with your May 2017 Challenge folks. I hope you like the option of doing either drawing or animation submissions? If so I will continue to do this in the future!
With animated wishes,
Tony. J
