JUNE 2017
The 'ACTION' drawing/animation challenge.
Sketchclub member, Klee Miller shared this video with me a few weeks ago. Apart from it being incredibly useful (that is, if you want to shed a little weight or get some fitness into your routine, away from your drawing board or desktop) it offers a great opportunity for the observation of strong character movement. Therefore it forms the subject of this month's drawing/animation challenge . . .
You'll see from any of the 6 exercise actions above that a number of principles of movement are visible - or they have the potential of being visible if you animate a character doing what they are doing . I'm thinking of such principles as 'weight', 'squash and stretch', 'bouncing ball action', 'overlapping action' and 'balance' come into play here. You are requested therefore to pick 1 of these actions and replicate it with an animator's eye - whether you choose to submit a drawing or animation this month. Specifically . . .
DRAWING:
Pick 1 of the actions above and produce 3 drawings (on a single file please) that define the core positions of the action of your choice. This means that you are effectively creating 3 key frames that would define it being animated, were you to consider animating it later. You can choose any character design you like, or you can simply draw the character as she is in the video. Remember however that the essence of good animation is the caricaturing, or exaggerating, of real-life movement in an animated world. So don't just trace the positions as they are. Really put extra strength and dynamic power into them!
ANIMATION:
If you choose to animate for this months challenge, study 1 of the actions above and replicate it as a repeating 'animation cycle.'. This means that you need to consider all the elements discussed in the 'DRAWING' assignment above, but add in-betweens and other tweeks to actually see your action in movement. Again, you can use any character design you like - and even add a background setting if you like. (Color is NOT necessary.) Essentially you are replicating that action in a repeat animation cycle way. This means that I would like you to have your action repeat a minimum of 3 times in the video, to show how well it does cycle when you play it.
The winners and chosen finalists of both these challenges will be presented on our website 'GALLERY' page as per normal, and winners will both receive a digital certificate of accomplishment.
Note: Our duel challenge for drawings or animation is FREE as usual and I will add general comments or observations of the entry work as a whole. However, if you want a personal analysis of what you submit for a significantly reduced mentoring fee (for Sketchclub members only) I will do that for a flat $10 fee via my 'ANIMATOR'S FRIEND' website. For this reduced fee I will personally review, analyze and/or critique your work for you alone. Feedback suggestions will be both text-based (by Private Messaging on Facebook) and using draw-over sketches from your animation to illustrate any points I need to make. This opportunity is in response to a large number of member requests. Further details of this and my other professional services can be found by scrolling down the 'Rates' page on The Animator's Friend website.
Lastly . . .
‘Good luck’ with your JUNE 2017 Challenge folks! I hope you have great fun in either drawing or animating the challenge this month!
With animated wishes,
Tony. :)
