JULY 2016
'Pas de Deux'
Last month's '4th July Parade' competition was quite a challenge. This month we're taking pity on you and have a simpler, more relaxed drawing challenge for everyone. Below is a film of two great dancers, giving us so many wonderful 'dynamic poses' and examples of 'perfect balance'.
This month's challenge is for you to carefully observe the action and pick just one frame of your own choice and draw the dynamic poses of both dancers. Be sure to indicate primarily the 'lines of dynamic action' and the 'inherent balance' your poses contain. As a reminder of what to look for, I would advise once again that 'perfect balance' is where the center of gravity of a character's body is over the point, or points, of contact with the ground beneath it. In other words, unless the character is deliberately out of balance (i.e. trying to initiate a new move towards a different direction, or that character is disorientated or drunk!) the character's body weight will be somewhere between their two feet on the ground - or over just one foot if the other is lifted off the ground.
So study this incredible 'pas de deux' action and freeze on a single frame that impresses you. . .

You can draw the two dancers realistically (i.e. just as you see them) or you can use characters of your own designs to define the action. However. . . the important thing is that whatever you do, you need to clearly define through your drawing the 'dynamic poses' of your selected action and ensure that the 'balance' is accurately described. Your drawings can be colored of simply be in black & white - and there's no need to draw the background unless you're especially inspired to do so!
Deadline:
Finally, the closing date of your entries is strictly Sunday, JULY 24th, at Midnight (Pacific Time).
Finally. . . 'Good luck' to everyone who can join us in the dance!
