'Lip Sync'
Lip sync is something that most animators tend not to have to deal with these days. But there are occasions when it’s important. Therefore it perhaps serves us well to make the August challenge all about ‘Lip Sync’.
Most people think that the most important thing about lip sync is getting the mouth positions to match the audio. However, this in fact is the least of their worries!
The most important thing with lip sync it to create perfect ‘Body Language’ that supports what is being said. If the character doesn’t look like they’re emoting what they’re saying, no amount of perfect mouth positioning will solve the problem. (As with all animation – ‘It’s all about the pose!’) With this in mind, here’s my suggestion of what might be the important priorities of approaching lip sync…
i) Body Language
ii) Facial Expression
iii) Mouth positioning
So, for this month’s challenge I want everyone to focus on the first priority above – i.e. audio related ‘Body Language’. Below you'll find a clip of dialogue I recorded a while back for a film idea I planned to promote at the time. Listen to the track and then create 3 strong body poses that reflect the mood of the words being said. You can use a character design of your own choice. But whatever you do, its poses should complement - even perhaps exaggerate - the words being said.
Put all 3 of your pose drawings onto a single drawing file and write below them the word (or words) that they are representing. You don’t have to choose words from the same sentence. So feel free to pick and choose words, as you prefer.

For the record, here is the text of the words being spoken. That way you can write down the relative ones exactly as you hear them…
One man,
One pencil,
And their creation, take on the might of Hollywood.
No fancy tunes.
No special effects.
No cast of thousands.
No predictable storylines.
Just…
One man,
One pencil,
And an infinite world of possibilities.
Power to the Pencil!
Looking forward to seeing how your poses interpret some of the words from the track!
