NOVEMBER 2016
'SPEAR THROW' challenge.
I have a friend who is a top animator at Pixar and he once explained to me that whenever he takes on a new action sequence he will always go to the best reference material he can find – even if he shoots himself acting it out. For the things he can’t do himself he will research the nearest matching footage on YouTube or elsewhere to study the action he will be working on. By 'researching' we are talking about creating a series of speed drawings that are based on stop-frame reference from real life images. However, the speed-drawn thumbnail sketches are just the beginning of the process, as from then an animator will need to draw up further extended and exaggerated poses – all done before ever starting to animate!
This month’s challenge requires that you create a minimum of 3 poses featuring a character throwing a spear. The character and the spear can be based on any design you choose. However, the reference pose sketches you will draw must be based on the above action sequence of an Olympic javelin thrower.
You must present your 3 spear throwing images on a single page file. However, just tracing them will not do. You have to instead extend and exaggerate them to create the most dynamic 3 key poses you can imagine. The final judgment of submissions will be based on how well you identify the poses from the reference photographs above and how well you exaggerate them in accordance with the need for the most dynamic form of animation you can eventually create.
Deadline:
The final closing date of your entries is (strictly) Sunday, November 27th, at Midnight (Pacific Time).
'GOOD LUCK' one and all! Throw those spears well guys!
