DECEMBER 2020
December is traditionally a seasonally active month - and I'm sure it will remain so this year, despite the pandemic. Consequently this month's challenge is a simple drawing one. This should make it somewhat much less demanding than would an animation one!
Although on the surface this one may look somewhat egotistical on my part, it is in fact not. What it is, is an opportunity to have your caricatures of myself and Richard Williams animated by me. You see, my last big project is called "The Old Man Mad About Animating" is is essentially animated memoirs of my life.
The project is a vast one and will probably need finance to make it all happen in the end. However, meanwhile I am animating short cameo pieces that will form part of the ultimate, movie-length film. I have already animated one of my repeated childhood nightmares (sorry, can't share it here yet I'm afraid) and am currently working on a desktop piece involving myself - in live action and featuring, Roger Rabbit style, my animated teaching companion, Arnie.
Next however I want to bring to life a presentation of the "Roy E. Disney Award" I made to Richard Williams in 2008 for my DRAWTASTIC Animation Festival. I have a cleaned-up and edited a much shorter audio track of the event that I wish to recreate in caricatured animation. Consequently, I am asking members to draw a caricature of myself and Richard Williams for possible consideration as the style of the piece.
I see it essentially as line drawing on a white background, so only the line caricatures are required right now. I am mindful of the fabulous piece that Eduardo Quintana so beautifully animated in Dick's style, of Richard Williams and Milt Kahl a few years ago. I don't of course in any way wish to copy that but I do wish to create something as sensitive and visually simplistic as that.
So, please do keep your designs as simple and as "animatable" as possible of course.
The winner will of course be credited in the final film when it's done - although I do deserve the right to not select any of the entries if I don't feel confident that I can animate them well. That said, if a winning caricature is selected, I will commission the winner to create a final "turnaround model sheet" for me, before I start the animation. Hopefully this could be a great opportunity for someone to have their designs animated in what I hope will be a seriously well made film ultimately - and to earn a small commission in the process!
The following images will hopefully help you with your caricatures, although there are countless others out there - especially of Richard Williams - if you Google search them.
CHALLENGE REMINDER:
Draw a single caricature of myself presenting a "Roy E. Disney Award" to Richard Williams in 2008.
(Note: A simple use of color is acceptable, although the caricature should essentially be in a simple line style!)
"Happy sketching" one and all - and "season's greetings" too of course!

Submissions must be in by midnight on THURSDAY, December 31st 2020 (Pacific Time).
Important note: You may have seen elsewhere that the Animator’s Sketchclub now has its own ANIMAKERS network! This does not mean that you cannot submit your challenge work via the Facebook group as normal. However, members of the “ANIMAKERS” animation community can submit there their work there and will get free feedback as a result of doing so. This will no longer happen with posts in the regular Facebook group. That said, ALL submissions will be eligible for judging equally at the end of the month - so it doesn’t really matter which way you submit your work.
Important note: The winner of each monthly challenge from now on will win FREE membership to the ANIMAKERS network for one year. (Unless they are already a member!) They will also get FREE 1-year membership of the private group within the network, called “SKETCHCLUB PRO”. (Again, if they don’t already have it!) Members of "Sketchclub Pro" will get more 1 on 1 feedback for their challenge work and also have the opportunity of resubmitting their work after their personal critique, as long as their resubmitted entry arrives before the published deadline.
Again though, it must again be stressed that whatever way your submission is entered, will be judged objectively and without prejudice.
This is our promise to all members ~ here or in the "ANIMAKERS" network community.
